Donation & Transplantation

8,562 cornea tissue donors and their families gave the gift of sight—changing the lives of thousands more awaiting a life-changing transplant.

Donors leave a lasting impact by giving the gift of sight. Donor families can honor their loved ones’ gifts by posting a tribute, writing to their loved one’s recipient, sharing their personal story about donation, or placing a leaf on our Tree of Vision.

Cala, aunt to donor Austin, shared some of her hopes for the people who received Austin’s corneas in her own tribute:

“While his beautiful soul is in heaven, I hope that Austin’s eyes help you to: See the good in others. See and appreciate Earth’s beauty – ESPECIALLY when you are at the ocean or a lake. See beyond yourself.

10,204 cornea tissues were provided for transplantation all around the world—a record-breaking number!

Cornea transplantation has the ability to transform lives. This is among the most common type of transplant and has a 97 percent success rate.

Oliver Chavez, a four-year-old cornea recipient from Indiana, and his family know better than anyone the life-altering impact of a transplant.

Before [his transplants], we were like, How can we help him enjoy the zoo? Now after his second transplant and a lot of healing, he can see. We went to the zoo for my birthday, and he said, ‘Oh mom, look at the macaws.’ I never really thought that would be something that I'd be able to share with him.”

Education & Training

By equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills they need, we are not only advancing the field of corneal transplantation but also strengthening the future of eye banking and vision care worldwide.

4,723 tissues were provided for research, education and training, and Eversight delivered 343 training sessions to 918 surgeons, fellows, residents, coordinators, eye bankers and other clinicians—ensuring that more professionals have the expertise to restore sight and improve patient outcomes.

Collaboration and knowledge-sharing are key to strengthening eye banking worldwide. The 2024 World Eye Bank Symposium brought together professionals from across the globe to exchange insights, explore innovations and work toward a future without corneal blindness.

“There are so many of us–eye bankers and surgeons–in the world trying to help people restore their sight. This really empowers me to do what I do. One day, with collaborative efforts from all, I firmly believe that we will live in a world without corneal blindness.”
- David Lee, Eversight International Program Director

Global Vision

105 tissues were provided at no cost or a reduced fee to support patients in need.

Eversight’s charitable tissue and Medical Service Trip programs extend the gift of sight to undeserved communities around the world, helping to restore vision for people who may not have otherwise had access to corneal transplantation.

Our reach extended to 34 countries, where we collaborated with surgeons and researchers to advance eye care and sight-saving procedures.

Education remained at the heart of our mission, with 187 international surgeons trained to enhance their skills and bring life-changing treatment to their communities.

"By sharing our expertise and resources, we can help build sustainable systems that provide the gift of sight to those who need it most."

Beyond direct surgical training, we invested in eye bank development to create long-term solutions for vision care. As one of the few nonprofit eye bank networks with the expertise, cultural competence and philanthropic support to assist partners in underserved countries, we worked to establish sustainable eye banking infrastructure—ensuring that the gift of sight will be available for generations to come.

Research & Development

Not all ocular tissue is used for transplantation. In 2024, 3,905 tissues were distributed externally for research, education and training. These invaluable gifts drive groundbreaking discoveries with the potential to transform vision care and treatment, ensuring a brighter future for countless people and their families around the world. In addition to providing tissue, Eversight’s research team collaborates with external research partners and stakeholders to share our expertise. This is evidenced by several partnerships that launched in 2024:

Empowering our people, expanding our impact

Investing in our people and fostering a strong, supportive culture is essential to the life-changing work we do every day. From the compassionate care provided to donor families to the meticulous efforts in tissue recovery, research and transplantation, every department plays a vital role in restoring sight and transforming lives.

Eversight hosted an all-staff meeting called Eversight Unite to celebrate every member of the Eversight team and the incredible impact they have on others, and to come together for meaningful conversations about ways we can all advance our mission.

“The idea for Eversight Unite began with the knowledge that our greatest strength has always been our people. We wanted to create an event that celebrated the passionate individuals who pour their hearts into our mission each and every day. They deserve to be recognized for their unwavering commitment and dedication to those in need. Additionally, it was very important that we also provide them an opportunity to connect with colleagues they only knew through email, video chat or sometimes not at all.”
