Celebrate World Sight Day to help focus attention on eye health as a global issue

World Sight Day 2022

October 10, 2022 - Each year on the second Thursday of October (October 13 this year), the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and institutions around the world celebrate World Sight Day to help focus attention on eye health as a global issue.

World Sight Day also aims to bring attention to the fact that while almost everyone on the planet will experience an eye health issue in their lifetime, more than a billion people do not have access to eye care services to correct, treat or prevent vision loss.

The World Health Organization’s World Report on Vision and the UN Resolution on Vision have cemented eye health as critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. But it takes all of us to help effect meaningful change. IAPB offers two ways for you to get involved with the World Sight Day initiative and remind everyone to take care of their eyes:

Pledge your sight test – Pledge to have an eye test or care for your eyes and share on social media to encourage others to do the same. The IAPB’s goal this World Sight Day is to get over five million eye tests pledged to raise awareness and drive demand.

Photo Competition – Bring awareness to this issue by joining the IAPB’s World Sight Day photo competition. This is an opportunity for amateur and professional photographers to demonstrate their skills and share with the world what they see and what it means to #LoveYourEyes. By entering the photo competition, your images become an important part of raising awareness and celebrating why everyone counts and no one should be left behind.
