ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 26, 2024 – The Superior Health Foundation has awarded Eversight a $15,000 grant to support clinical operations that will continue making eye donation and corneal transplantation possible in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.).
“A loss of sight is limiting in many regards,” said Becky Harris, Foundations & Corporations, Eversight. “It prevents individuals from working, receiving an income and supporting their families. It makes individuals feel lonely and isolated and can lead to rapid cognitive decline and a higher risk of accidents, like falling. This generous grant from the Superior Health Foundation will allow a second chance at sight for those in need in the U.P.”
In 2023, Eversight worked with the families of 55 Upper Peninsula donors who gave the gift of sight and provided surgeons with 11 cornea tissues for transplant for Upper Peninsula residents.
The Foundation’s support will help Eversight honor the wishes of 37 Upper Peninsula residents to donate the gift of sight and fully cover the cost of preparing and shipping three additional cornea tissues for transplantation for Upper Peninsula residents.
“We are excited to support Eversight’s efforts in Michigan's Upper Peninsula,” said Megan Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, Superior Health Foundation. “This grant will help Eversight extend its reach, bringing hope to individuals facing vision challenges. We are proud to contribute to such an impactful cause.”
The Superior Health Foundation’s mission is to assist with unmet needs, health education and programs and research on preventing illness and promoting health in the Upper Peninsula. Its vision is to improve the health of the residents of the Upper Peninsula.
Better eye health can lead to broad-reaching benefits across a variety of socio-economic factors. As the sole eye bank serving the entire state of Michigan, Eversight is the only organization recovering this precious gift and preparing it for critical sight-saving transplants.
