Grant will enable up to 22 people to receive life-changing cornea transplants

Henry and Louise Timken Foundation grant supports Stark County operations

CLEVELAND, Sept. 18, 2023 – The Henry and Louise Timken Foundation, a supporting foundation of Stark Community Foundation, has awarded Eversight a $5,000 grant to support the purchase of clinical supplies for cornea donation and transplantation for Stark County residents.

Eversight recovers, prepares and provides donated eye tissue for more than 6,500 sight restoring corneal transplants every year and is the only nonprofit organization recovering and providing donated cornea tissue for transplant in northeast Ohio.

“Cornea transplants are the most common type of transplant and are performed to treat corneal blindness with a more than 95% success rate,” said Becky Harris, Philanthropy Director, Foundations & Corporations, Eversight. “This is a critical surgery that thousands depend on to live their lives to the fullest, and Eversight plays a key role as the only nonprofit providing tissue for these transplants in Stark County.”

In 2022, Eversight worked with 89 Stark County donors and their families who gave the gift of sight for transplantation, research and education. In 2022, Stark County surgeons relied on Eversight to provide 23 tissues for safe transplantation for their patients. The Henry and Louise Timken Foundation’s generous gift will enable up to 11 Stark County donors and their families to give the gift of sight. Because one person can donate both corneas, this grant may help up to 22 people receive a life-changing cornea transplant.

“The Henry and Louise Timken Foundation is pleased to support the mission of Eversight to prevent blindness and restore sight through donations, transplantation and research,” said Jane Timken, President of the Henry and Louise Timken Foundation. “This will have a direct benefit for many individuals and families in Stark County."

The Henry and Louise Timken Foundation is a supporting foundation governed by a Board of Trustees awarding charitable grants primarily for the benefit of the Stark County community and programs of special interest.

Since 1963 when Stark Community Foundation was formed, hundreds of thousands of people’s lives have been changed through the power of philanthropy. Their mission is to partner with individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits to help them achieve their charitable goals.

You, too, can contribute to making vision a reality in your community. Give to Eversight today.
