The Youngstown Foundation awards $5,000 grant to Eversight to support clinical operations in Mahoning and Trumbull counties

Foundation grant gives northeast Ohio communities a second chance at sight

CLEVELAND, April 28, 2025 – The Youngstown Foundation has awarded Eversight a $5,000 grant to support clinical operations in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. This generous gift will help Eversight continue its mission of restoring sight and preventing blindness through the healing power of donation, transplantation and research.

As the only eye bank serving these two counties, Eversight plays a critical role in making sight-restoring corneal transplants possible for local residents. In 2024, Eversight worked with 41 cornea tissue donors and their families who gave the gift of sight at Mercy Health-St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. The same year, 22 Youngstown residents received a second chance at sight through corneal transplantation.

This grant will allow Eversight to honor the wishes of up to nine people to give the gift of sight, and to prepare one tissue for corneal transplant—directly impacting the lives of recipients in the Youngstown community.

“Every eye donor has the potential to change someone’s life,” said Becky Harris, Philanthropy Director, Foundations & Corporations, Eversight. “This grant from The Youngstown Foundation makes that possible in a very real way. It’s a gift not only to those receiving sight but to the entire community.”

The Youngstown Foundation’s mission is to provide financial assistance to charitable, scientific and educational institutions that promote the mental, moral and physical well-being of the inhabitants of the Youngstown community.

“We are beyond grateful for The Youngstown Foundation’s ongoing support. The Foundation has contributed to Eversight since 2022, and our mission would not be possible without their generosity,” Harris said. “Support from The Foundation helps us be there 24/7 for local hospitals, donor families and recipients in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.”

Eversight serves as northeast Ohio’s only eye bank and provider of corneal tissue for transplantation. Deeply ingrained partnerships with peer healthcare organizations in Ohio strengthen Eversight’s community connection and commitment to being responsible stewards of the gift of sight for Ohioans.
