Grant supports purchase of clinical supplies to fulfill donor family wishes and give the gift of sight

Superior Health Foundation facilitates sight restoration in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 11, 2024 – Eversight, a nonprofit eye bank dedicated to restoring sight and preventing blindness worldwide through donation, transplantation and research, has received a $10,000 grant from the Superior Health Foundation to support the purchase of recovery and processing supplies to continue making eye donation and corneal transplantation possible in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.).

“This grant from the Superior Health Foundation will allow 20 Upper Peninsula eye donors and their families to give the gift of sight to up to 40 people,” said Becky Harris, Foundations & Corporations Philanthropy Director, Eversight. “It will also allow Eversight to prepare an additional three tissues for sight-saving transplants within the Upper Peninsula. We are so grateful for their continued work to meet the needs of Upper Peninsula residents.”

In 2023, Eversight worked with the families of 55 Upper Peninsula donors who gave the gift of sight and provided surgeons with 11 cornea tissues for transplant for Upper Peninsula residents.

“The Superior Health Foundation continues to applaud the work of Eversight,” said Jim LaJoie, Executive Director of the Superior Health Foundation. “These grant dollars are enabling individuals to have the gift of sight. We think that is pretty special.”

The Superior Health Foundation’s mission is to assist with unmet healthcare needs, health education and programs and research on preventing illness and promoting health in the Upper Peninsula. Its vision is to improve the health of the residents of the Upper Peninsula.

Better eye health can lead to broad-reaching benefits across a variety of socio-economic factors. As the sole eye bank serving the entire state of Michigan, Eversight is the only organization recovering this precious gift and preparing it for critical sight-saving transplants.
